Should NZ tradies use a website chatbot?
By Tradie Future editorial · 9 November 2026 · Practical guide
Start with the problem, not the tool
If most enquiries arrive by phone and your website is rarely visited, website chat may not be the first investment. A clear contact page and a reliable response process may be enough.
Good fits for an assistant
Chat can help when visitors repeatedly ask about services, coverage and how to request a quote. It can also gather a brief while your team is busy, provided the information reaches a person reliably.
Situations that need a person
Fault diagnosis, emergency work, structural decisions and binding prices should not be improvised. Provide an urgent-contact route approved by the business and explain that the assistant is not an emergency service.
Compare the whole cost
Count setup, monthly fees, reply limits, integration work and time spent checking answers. Ask how you can export data, stop the service and remove the widget. Avoid unlimited promises without clear conditions.
Run a small test
Choose one intake flow and a set of realistic questions, including unknown and unsafe requests. Define success as more useful enquiry details and less repeated admin, not an assumed percentage increase in revenue.
A useful next step
Review a simple enquiry workflow or discuss your own process.
